What Is Life Design?

What if you stopped trying to find the one "right" path—and started designing a life that reflects who you're becoming?

Life is full of transitions. Some we choose. Others choose us. Whether you're navigating a career change, retirement, an empty nest, or simply sensing it's time for something different, it's natural to wonder: What's next?

Life Design offers a practical, creative approach to answering that question.

Developed at Stanford University by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, Life Design applies the principles of design thinking—the same human-centered process used to solve complex problems—to the design of our lives.

Rather than searching for one perfect answer, Life Design encourages us to get curious, generate possibilities, learn through small experiments, and intentionally build a life that reflects our interests, values, and who we're becoming.

Today, the Life Design methodology is taught around the world through workshops, coaching, and organizations, and has reached hundreds of thousands of people through the New York Times bestselling book, Designing Your Life, How to Live a Well-Lived Life.

What Life Design Makes Possible?

Life Design is more than a framework—it's a practical, creative approach to navigating life's transitions with greater clarity, confidence, and intention. Rather than searching for one "right" answer, you'll learn how to approach your life with curiosity, experiment with new possibilities, and build your way forward one step at a time.

Along the way, you'll learn how to:

  • Explore the stories, beliefs, and assumptions that have shaped your personal and professional journey—and reframe those that no longer serve you.

  • Clarify what matters most by reflecting on your Lifeview and Workview and discovering greater coherence between your values, your work, and the life you want to create.

  • Reconnect with what energizes you, using practical design thinking tools to better understand your balance, energy, and overall well-being.

  • Imagine multiple possible futures through Odyssey Planning, expanding your thinking beyond a single path and opening yourself to new possibilities.

  • Experiment before you commit, using small prototypes to test ideas, gather real-world insights, and build confidence through action.

  • Create a personalized action plan with meaningful next steps so you can intentionally design what comes next.

Whether you're navigating a career transition, retirement, an empty nest, or simply sensing that it's time for something different, Life Design provides a proven process for moving forward with curiosity instead of certainty—and possibility instead of perfection.

The Life Design Practice

At its heart, Life Design comes down to four simple, repeatable practices.

Get Curious Approach your life like an explorer rather than a critic. Curiosity opens doors that judgment often keeps closed.

Talk to People We're not meant to figure life out alone. Conversations with people whose work or lives inspire you often provide insights you could never discover by thinking in isolation.

Try Stuff Instead of waiting until you know the perfect answer, take small, low-risk steps. Every prototype teaches you something valuable about what fits — and what doesn't.

Tell Your Story The stories we tell ourselves shape what we believe is possible. Learning to reframe those stories can open the door to entirely new possibilities.

What Life Design Makes Possible

Through the Life Design approach, you'll learn how to:

  • Explore the stories, beliefs, and assumptions that have shaped your life—and reframe those that no longer serve you.

  • Clarify what matters most by developing greater coherence between your values, your work, and the life you want to create.

  • Reconnect with what energizes you while using practical design thinking tools to enhance your well-being and navigate change with intention.

  • Imagine multiple possible futures through Odyssey Planning, expanding your thinking beyond a single "right" path.

  • Experiment before you commit, using small prototypes to test ideas, gather insights, and build confidence through action.

  • Create a personalized action plan with practical next steps so you can begin intentionally designing what comes next.
